MEET HUDSON

My Happy Place has the honor of traveling to Eldridge, IA (Quad City area) in Feb. to give the unique gift of a bedroom makeover to sweet 4-year-old, Hudson McKearney. Hudson’s mother, Jessica, sent in an application for her son last July, but after learning the money would need to be raised in their community, she felt because of the incredible community support they had already been shown, that she just couldn’t ask for anything more. It took a little convincing to assure the McKearney’s that they wouldn’t have to ask for anything. My Happy Place would do the asking, with the knowing that raising the funds would be an easy task. To all of our followers along with friends and family of the McKearney’s, this is your opportunity to show them that the support will always be there for them… for as long as it’s needed! Any money raised above the amount needed for the room will go on a gift card for the McKearney’s. Hudson’s Reveal date is set for Sun. morning, Feb. 20th

Carly Stevenson

On Sunday, July 25, Carly Stevenson, a Charles City 2021 graduate and accomplished athlete, began having shortness of breath and experienced seizure like symptoms. Her parents drove her to the ER where they discovered she had a large blood clot in her heart and several in her lungs. She went into cardiac arrest three times and was resuscitated each time. Carly was then life flighted to Des Moines. She was placed on ECMO, which is a heart bypass machine, to give her heart a break. She had compartmental bleeding inside her body and they were unsure where it was coming from. She was given many units of blood to replace what was lost. They put chest tubes in to relieve pressure, but her body was quickly filling with fluid. They needed to make an incision from her sternum to her lower abdomen to relieve the pressure due to internal bleeding. She had lost pulses to her lower extremities and the incision immediately brought her circulation back. While on the ventilator, Carly developed infections in her lungs. She fought so hard to finally get off the ventilator after a significant amount of time. Carly suffered severe damage to her brain, but her brainstem was not damaged. Doctors recommended that life support be disconnected, but Brian and Michelle decided that they were going to love and care for Carly no matter what that looked like! They believe Carly is their gift from God and they are prepared to care for her at home regardless of the situation! Carly went to Madonna House for rehabilitation until her insurance company decided that she had to be transferred to On With Life Rehabilitation in Ankeny. She is there until the home can be modified to accommodate her needs.

Once home, Carly will receive PT, OT, and ST at home. Her mother will care for all of her activities of daily living. While Carly can make sounds, she is not able to communicate with words yet and requires 24/7 total care. She has a J-tube for feeding but is beginning to take pureed foods orally. Carly also has alternative therapies such as acupuncture and essential oils. Carly is making so much progress daily, it is astonishing. But getting home in a familiar environment surrounded by those that love her will accelerate this recovery!

This family was put in a situation that no family should have to face. Carly went from a fun-loving teenage girl who just graduated from high school who was excitedly preparing for college, to the brink of death in an instant. If you looked at Carly’s medical chart, you would never believe that this child would be alive today. But Carly’s family looked to their faith and to their daughter, for their answer as to how to respond to what the doctors were telling them. They knew they had to fight for Carly as hard as Carly fought for herself. Carly fought through cardiac arrest…3 times and SURVIVED. Her parents were told she would not live through the trip to Mercy One Des Moines. Carly fought through the life flight to Des Moines and SURVIVED! Her parents were told that she would not make it through the first night. Carly fought through the first night and SURVIVED. Her parents were told she would not overcome all of the complications she had (severe swelling in her brain and body, stomach surgery, kidney issues, & pneumonia-to name a few). But Carly SURVIVED! The faith, strength, and hope demonstrated by this family is something that cannot be put into words. They just want to bring their child home to a safe, happy place where she can not only SURVIVE, but THRIVE!!! The family has a mountain of medical bills and Carly’s mother has not worked since the day Carly became ill and will not be able to work in the near future due to the requirements for caring for Carly. This family has been separated since July and they just want to get Carly and the family back together again at home, where they belong!! Visitors have been limited throughout this ordeal due to Covid, so it has been incredibly difficulty on Carly and her family!

Carly has 3 siblings: Miyah 13, Jenya 15 and a brother Wyatt.

Savannah Gunn

Savannah is a spirited fourteen-year-old that was just starting to enjoy the freedoms that summer had to offer: sleeping in, unlimited time with friends, late nights in the cul de sac with neighborhood friends when she noticed a purple rash forming on her arms and legs. She was taken in for what were thought to be routine labs to check for a potential cause of the rash and bruising. A call a few hours later changed the course of her summer and her life.

Savannah and her family were instructed to present to the emergency room immediately, as her labs were so acutely abnormal. Savannah was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on June 17th. Further cytogenetics testing determined that she had a high-risk genetic mutation that would require a bone marrow transplant, along with long term oral chemotherapy post-acute treatment, to prevent relapse.

Savannah underwent two rounds of aggressive chemotherapy throughout the summer at Blank Children’s Hospital with each round requiring month long hospital stays. She underwent a bone marrow transplant on September 22nd at the University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital and is required to be in Minneapolis for continued care and monitoring through the end of the year.

Savannah and her mom enjoy weekend visits from her siblings and Dad but the separation from family and friends is a very challenging part of this journey. Savannah has a brother, Parker age 12 and little sister, Tinley age 10. Savannah enjoys cheerleading both Allstar and sideline, track, golf and above all spending time with her family and friends. Savannah’s energy and bright spirit make her a joy to be around.  She has been so inspiring as she’s taken on the challenges she’s faced living with leukemia, and truly makes the best of each experience and challenge.

When the transplant team determines that it is safe for Savannah to return to Iowa she will be required to remain in isolation for several months as her immune system matures and the process of re-vaccination begins. Savannah’s room will be not only be an area of personal space that she has not had for much of the year with lengthy hospital stays but just thinking of it. This opportunity adds another layer of complete excitement and joy at the thought of returning home for Savannah. also a place for her to complete online school work and re-gain her independence. Savannah has been dreaming of rearranging her room since the early stages of diagnoses as she longed to be home in her own space. Savannah’s Aunt Heather nominated her for ‘My Happy Place’ as she knew what it would mean to Savannah to have a space of her own to relax and get re-acquainted with life outside of the hospital and back home with her family. Ever since hearing from the team at ‘My Happy Place’ that Savannah was chosen for a room renovation, her face lights up with delight
